Do you ever ask yourself the question, why? Why did I say that? Why do I feel this way? How about those questions that begin with the word, what? What am I suppose to do? What does God want me to do? What is my purpose? Am I where God wants me to be? When am I going to figure this out? Maybe I am alone with asking myself these questions, but I am guessing I am not alone.
Thanks to an opportunity through Baker Publishing Group, I just finished reading: You’re Already Amazing, written by Holley Gerth. If you have visited her blog, you know she writes right to your heart. When I read her blog posts, I feel as if she is writing for me. Her book is no different. Her words guide you to look inside your heart and your mind. You realize why you think and respond the way you do. It allows you to look at this wonderful person God created called, you. Through each chapter you dive a little deeper into who you are, who God wants you to be, and why you are amazing. You are able to step back and answer those who, what, why, where, and when questions.
When reading Holley’s book I read it with my pen and highlighter close by. I was circling, starring, and highlighting my favorite parts. I made notes of pages that I could feel God talking to my heart. When reading a book, I love finding that “hook” that draws you in more. One of my favorite hook’s came on page 20;
“You think you have to take what’s broken and make it perfect in order to be used by me. But I think in a completely different way. I took what was perfect, my Son, and made him broken so that you could be whole. And because you belong to him, your brokenness can bring healing to others too.”
Holley did it again, written in black and white, speaking right to my heart. I understand broken 100%. I grabbed my journal and wrote down those moments in life when I felt broken. When looking at those times, moments, and experiences; I was able to see how God has used them for his power and his glory. When I allowed him to work through me, I was able to be healed. Powerful stuff…yes! And I am only on page 20; there are 173 more to go!
Did you ever allow one of those broken moments to define you? Define you in a way that is negative? Allowing yourself to listen to the negative and not the positive? I have and it doesn’t feel good. Guess what? God didn’t make me to feel defeated; he wants me to be empowered. Empowered by the strengths which he gave me…gave you. We are each different. That is exactly how he indented it to be.
Yes, it’s important to understand who he’s made you to be and what he’s called you to do, but living in that is a process that will unfold for a lifetime. (Page 135)
Holley’s words have a way of steering one to explore what makes up your heart and your mind. A changing moment for me was realizing that I make my choices based on my emotions. I have always wanted to be someone who can step back and analyze the situation before becoming emotionally connected, but that is not me. I wear my emotions on my sleeve. It is how God made me and it is for a purpose! The same is true for you.
How about having the knowledge and understanding to be able to write a life sentence, the sentence God wrote just for you. Having the tools available to take that life sentence and put it into practice.
If you haven’t figured it out yet: you’re amazing because you’re God’s creation and he lives in you. You’re valuable because you belong to him. You’re worth investing in because he paid the ultimate price for you. (Page 173)
This is one of those wonderful books that I will read more than once and learn something new with each read. The title of Holley Gerth’s book, You’re Already Amazing, says it best. You can visit Holley at Heart to Heart with Holley for information to order her book or enjoy her blog. Enjoy!!
